Jabarkhet Nature Walk – A guided Exploration at J-N-R, Mussoorie.
After a briefing about the walk and place, followed by registration, the best trails will be selected according to the season and need of the group. During the guided explorations at Jabarkhet Nature Reserve, you’ll learn about wildlife signs and identify common birds, flowers, trees, mushrooms, and butterflies. You’ll also have the chance to view the latest photos of wildlife captured on trail cameras installed in the Reserve. Depending on the time of year, the walk may offer stunning views of the snow-covered Himalayas, dense forest trails, and flower-filled meadows. The walk can be customized to suit the needs of the group, whether it includes children, elderly people, or novice walkers. The guides of Jabarkhet Nature Reserve are trained and specialized for conducting all types of walks into this pristine Himalayan forest. The walk concludes at a hut surrounded by old farming fields called a meadow, where you can relax with a cup of tea. JNR souvenirs are also available for purchase at the hut.
Self-Guided Exploration
Visitors who are experienced hikers or have been here multiple times can explore the trails by themselves using the JNR Trail Map and signboards placed everywhere in the forest. Visitors can come to the entrance and get a copy of the trail map and walking stick after registration. Please carry any ID proof for security purposes.
Please note the reserve will not be responsible if any member gets lost / injured during the self-guided walk.
About JNR
Jabarkhet Nature Reserve (JNR) is the first private nature reserve in North India and is one of the first of its kind. It also falls under the category of OECM (Other Effective Conservation Measures). This beautiful nature reserve is located in Mussoorie, just 5 km from Mall Road. It is surrounded by one of the few significant areas of natural Oak, Rhododendron, and Deodar forests remaining in Mussoorie. JNR is about 110 acres of private forest that had been severely degraded due to decades of neglect and uncontrolled use. Extensive cutting and lopping of oak and rhododendron trees had altered the composition of the forest and vegetation, while year-round livestock grazing and affected ground vegetation. Continuous grass cutting and the collection of other forest products were persistent sources of disturbance. Hunting was common, and snares were frequently found along the trails and slopes. Local residents and passing visitors used the hill for picnics and barbecues, leaving trash scattered across the hillside. It was evident that unless the area was conserved, restored, and protected, it would continue to degrade further.
After the hard work of Team JNR and the local community, 700 kgs of trash were cleared from the forest, and 2.5 years of effort, the Reserve was officially established on the 2nd of May 2015. Today, the forest is in very good condition and has become one of the must-visit destination for many travelers staying nearby, as well as a designated spot for nature lovers for nature walks, hikes, and birding. During the last biodiversity survey, 250+ flowering plants, 100+ wild mushrooms, 150+ birds, 20+ ferns, 30+ grasses, and wild animals found in the foothills of the Himalayas were reported. After the preservation, the forest also plays a significant role in promoting environmental education and sustainable ecotourism.

Before you plan to go for the walk, please make sure you have the following essentials for a safe and comfortable journey. In case you don’t have any of these things, please let us know in advance so we can arrange them for you.
